Protein Balls - Gluten Free, No Oats, Nut Free and Vegetarian

Protein balls are a great quick snack. They are easy to make, do not require baking and being nut free they make a great lunch box filler.

I used a recipe which contains oats for a couple of years, however, when we found out my son was coeliac we also found out he needed to avoid GF oats also, so I set out to reintroduce this favourite snack. After some trial and error I came up with my own version of GF, oat free, nut free protein energy balls. Hope you enjoy them!


8 -10 medjool dates *

1/2 cup hemp seeds

1/2 sesame seeds (I used black sesame seeds, but regular white ones work just as well)

1 cup shredded coconut**

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup protein powder

2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup


1. Put the dates into a food processor and blend them. Once blended, add all the other ingredients, pulse till they are completely blended. OR If you like a slight crunch (like me), mix them by hand after blending the dates. 2. Roll into balls and then roll in additional cocoa powder or coconut.

3. Store them in the fridge and enjoy!


*I use medjool dates because they are juicy and easy on your food processor ;). If using other dates you might need to rehydrate them slightly to be able to process them - just add water or nut milk slowly.

**I use Probios GF Organic Coconut Chips and put them into the food processor before to shred them.


To decrease the sugar content, you can opt to use 4-6 dates and just add water or nut milk slowly till the mix comes together and can be rolled into one big ball. It will change the texture and sweetness but still very tasty!
